Logan Middle School Teacher Arrested on Sexual Abuse Charge
Parents place a lot of trust in their children’s teachers and school. For those six or seven hours of school, parents expect their kids to learn and socialize with their friends in a safe environment. They don’t expect that their child will become the target of sexual abuse by a teacher. This nightmare is playing out as a Logan County Middle School teacher has been arrested and held on a $50,000 cash-only bail bond. The charge is sexual abuse against a minor.
As reported by WCHS TV, Curtis Collins Jr., 44, was arrested after the Logan County Schools announced two staff members were under investigation for inappropriate behavior. In the criminal complaint file in Logan County Magistrate, investigators detailed that photos of Collins kissing a ninth-grade student in the backseat of a car in a Walmart parking lot were submitted by another girl who was a witness.
Shortly after the initial complaint, a search warrant was executed for Collins’ electronic devices. Investigators found several phone calls between the student and Collins. That included a sexually suggestive photo of Collins sent over Snapchat to the minor, along with suggestive messages from Collins.
A Statement From the School
“We understand the concern this situation has caused and want to reassure our families and communities that we are working diligently to ensure accountability and maintain a safe environment for all students and staff,” the school district said in the news release.
Logan County Sheriff Paul Clemens also confirmed that an active investigation is underway involving a second school staff member. However, Clemens could not release further details at this time due to the ongoing investigation.
Finding Accountability
In a situation like this, the family of the victim can feel overwhelmed with hopelessness and anger. While the police and state attorney prosecute the assailant, the family may have recourse to hold the school and the district accountable. If it can be established that those institutions failed to provide a safe environment for their students or failed to follow proper hiring practices and training, they could be held liable.
Although making that assertion will be a challenge, an experienced sexual abuse lawyer will know how to navigate the process.
