Mount View High Teacher Arrested in Sexual Abuse Case

It is every parent’s worst nightmare to discover their child has been abused in an environment they thought would be safe: the school. According to a report by WVVA, a McDowell County teacher was arrested and charged with multiple sexual abuse-related charges.

The official charge of “sexual abuse by a person in a position of trust, prohibitive sexual contact against a student by a school employee, and solicitation of a minor,” has been levied against Tyree Donell Baker, 27.

The arrest followed the McDowell County Sheriff’s Department’s notification of a complaint filed by the school system against Baker. According to the complaint, it is alleged that Baker performed sexual acts on a male student during school hours. The acts allegedly occurred between October 2025 and December 2025, involving a total of 10 separate instances.

Disturbing Details

The complaint further alleges that Baker had the victim in his 7th-period class and would take him out of class to engage in the acts. That is confirmed by school surveillance footage, which shows Baker walking the victim from the gym to his classroom. As if those heinous acts weren’t enough, the complaint also alleges that Bake threatened the victim if the sexual acts weren’t carried out.

The charges against Baker include 10 counts of Sexual Abuse by a person in a position of trust, 10 counts of Prohibiting Sexual Intercourse, Sexual Intrusion, or Sexual Contact, Against Students by School Employees, and 10 more counts of Solicitation of a Minor by Other Means.

Broken Trust

What is especially disturbing might be the surveillance footage. It shows that the school recognized the importance of these safety measures, but it still couldn’t prevent this type of situation. This might also be an example of a school failing to put in place additional protocols that could prevent such an occurrence.

Every parent who sends their child to school expects the school to provide a measure of protection throughout the day. In this type of situation, the parents of the alleged victim would be right to question the school and its policies. Did they provide enough training for the staff? Were students taught about these kinds of harmful encounters?

These are the types of questions that a dedicated sexual abuse lawyer might ask. The attorneys at Hendrickson & Long, PLLC have helped many families whose children have been abused by once-trusted officials.
