VW Emission Test Fraud
For years Volkswagen has advertised its “clean diesel” passenger cars as being able to harness the fuel efficiency and power of diesel, while also keeping emissions low and well within or below legal limits. In the U.S. alone, approximately 482,000 VW vehicles have been equipped with software called a “defeat device,” which was designed to cheat EPA-required emissions tests by giving off significantly less pollutants during tests than during normal driving conditions.
Volkswagen’s Clean Diesel engines are now known to emit up to 40 times the legal limit of nitrogen oxide emissions—a pollutant that can affect respiratory problems such as asthma, bronchitis and emphysema.
Customers were intentionally deceived into paying a premium for “green” cars, and dealers were tricked into promoting a product that emits pollutants well beyond the government standard.
