West Virginia Man Accused of Sexually Exploiting Children Using AI and Hidden Cameras
Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is revolutionizing many industries from healthcare to finance. It is expanding how companies like Amazon and Netflix can make recommendations to their customers, and helping with education and creative fields. Unfortunately, there is also a dark side to AI where it is being manipulated to harm the most vulnerable in our society.
That worst-case scenario is front and center in the recent arrest of a Jackson County man who is accused of using AI to generate videos of children that he filmed using a hidden camera.
Caleb Bourgeois, of Cottageville, has been arrested on charges of sexual exploitation of children that authorities claim began at last year’s Jackson County Junior Fair. What’s especially alarming is that these exploitative videos came to light because of a domestic disturbance call that the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office responded to. Apparently, Bourgeois’s wife found the videos on his phone and flew into a rage.
When the Sheriff’s Department responded, they were made aware of the videos and launched an investigation.
According to what was discovered, Bourgeois, who was a member of the Jackson County Junior Fair Board, allegedly placed a camera in a camper to film children changing clothes. He then used that footage with certain AI tools to generate videos of children performing sexual acts.
“What started out as a domestic-type dispute between husband and wife soon turned into this child pornography case,” Sheriff Ross Mellinger said to 13News. “This guy was pretty good about creating opportunities.”
Concerned Parents Reach Out to the Sheriff’s Department
As word of this arrest began to spread through the community, parents began calling into the Sheriff’s department with concerns over whether their children might be victims. They are asking anyone who thinks their child may have been another victim to contact them at 304-373-2290 immediately.
Sheriff Mellinger went on to say that now is the time for parents to have tough but vital conversations with their children about sexual exploitation and the dangers of artificial intelligence.
“You’ve got to talk to your kids and make them understand that this is real,” he said. “This isn’t something you see on the news somewhere else in another state; this is good ole Jackson County, and it’s very real.”
As for Bourgeois, the police seized multiple devices and computers from his home. He is currently being held at the South Central Regional Jail on $250,000 bail.
