Elkins, WV Pastor Arrested for Soliciting a Minor Online
The Elkins community is grappling with troubling news surrounding a former pastor of Summit Church. Kevin Curtis Jones faces two serious felony charges following an investigation into alleged crimes involving a minor.
Cases like this are heartbreaking. Sexual abuse and exploitation shatter trust, create emotional pain, and leave victims and families searching for answers. When the accused is someone in a position of authority or spiritual guidance, that sense of betrayal can feel even heavier. Let us take a look at this particular case and explain what victims can do to seek help.
The Details of the Case
According to WDTV 5, Jones was first arrested on October 1 for soliciting a minor via computer.
Since then, investigators have added another charge of distribution and exhibition of material depicting minors engaged in sexually explicit activity. An investigation reportedly discovered explicit images and an AI-generated photo of the alleged victim on Jones’s cellphone.
According to court documents obtained by The Inter-Mountain, the Barbour County Sheriff’s Office and the Mountain Region Drug and Violent Crime Task Force executed a search warrant on Jones’ digital devices. Officers allegedly found multiple images of the victim taken when they were under 18 years old.
Along with that, there was an AI-generated image that depicted the victim in a sexual manner.
Investigators believe that Jones used his role as a pastor to develop a personal connection with the victim. The criminal complaint also describes text conversations. Jones discussed the possibility of a “clandestine relationship” once the victim became an adult. The alleged victim confirmed to officers that Jones had solicited them electronically.
Jones remains in custody at Tygart Valley Regional Jail with two separate $50,000 cash-only bonds.
The investigation is ongoing.
The Legal and Emotional Impact of These Crimes
Cases involving the exploitation or solicitation of minors are some of the most serious under West Virginia law. When the accused holds a position of trust, such as a pastor, teacher, or mentor, that betrayal can make recovery even more complicated for victims and their families. These crimes leave emotional scars, not only on those directly affected but across entire communities.
This case also highlights how quickly technology is changing the legal landscape. Unfortunately, that now means it can be misused. The growing use of AI-generated images to exploit victims adds a new and invasive layer to these offenses. In turn, that makes the abuse even more traumatic.
As technology evolves, so does the need for skilled legal professionals who understand both the emotional and legal complexities of these cases. Families facing these situations deserve compassionate guidance, clear answers, and a team that knows how to protect their rights every step of the way.
