Former Maryland Youth Pastor Arrested in Georgia Over Sex Abuse Charges
When someone we have trusted with our faith causes harm, it can shake the very ground we stand on. Clergy sexual abuse ripples through families, communities, and the institutions meant to protect and guide us.
After the arrest of former youth pastor Thomas Pinkerton, many in the community are shocked and have plenty of questions. Here is what we know about the latest case of a spiritual leader abusing their position of power.
Details of the Case
According to WSBTV, Thomas Pinkerton, 52, was recently arrested in Baltimore County, Maryland, on multiple sex abuse charges when he worked as a youth pastor. These incidents allegedly occurred between 2006 and 2010.
Pinkerton was extradited to Maryland from Georgia. He is facing 24 criminal counts, including 14 felonies. Currently, he is being held without bond.
The alleged abuse reportedly took place both at Central Christian Church in Baltimore County and at Pinkerton’s home. According to WMAR, the investigation began after a man living in West Virginia came forward in late 2024.
During the investigation, he stated that the abuse initially involved innocent behaviors. However, over time, these actions escalated into sexual abuse. He also described how Pinkerton exploited his position as a youth pastor to perpetuate the abuse. Throughout the interview, the man also identified other potential victims.
This led investigators to interview a total of seven men. Some of these individuals were minors at the time of the alleged incidents. Many of the young men considered Pinkerton to be a mentor or spiritual father figure. However, while they were visiting his house or on a mission trip, he would initiate physical contact.
Authorities have expressed concern that additional survivors may not have come forward.

The Impact on the Church Community
Lead Pastor Larry Kirk of Central Christian described the news as “deeply heartbreaking.” Pinkerton left the church more than 15 years ago to start his ministry. However, the news of the incidents has shaken the community.
“We are committed to walking alongside these young men with compassion and support. The church has offered counseling and spiritual support to those affected and has fully cooperated with law enforcement. At the same time, this case remains under investigation,” Kirk stated, and that there is “absolutely no place for abuse—ever—in the church.”
Recognizing Signs of Clergy Abuse
Unfortunately, this is another incident involving sexual abuse by clergy. Many times, it begins subtly and escalates over time.
Some warning signs may include:
- A child or vulnerable adult becoming unusually secretive or isolated around a clergy member
- Sexualized comments or inappropriate physical contact
- Behavioral changes, such as withdrawal, anxiety, aggression, or sudden mood swings
As this case shows us, even if the abuse happened years ago, it is never too late to speak up.
