Former Mingo County Teacher Accused of Having Inappropriate Relationship with Student
A Mingo Central High School teacher has been arrested and charged with allegedly having had inappropriate sexual contact with an underage female student, according to a story published by WCHS Eyewitness News.
Former substitute teacher, Kevin Scott Baisden of Delbarton, West Virginia, was charged with two counts of sexual contact against students by a school employee and one count of soliciting a minor. The charges come after a complaint was filed by a Mingo Central High School assistant principal after they learned about inappropriate text messages between Baisden and a 16-year-old female student.
According to the complaint, the inappropriate incidents between Baisden and the student occurred between November and December 2024.
Authorities interviewed the victim, who revealed that Baisden had allegedly smacked her on the buttocks with a guitar, grabbed her hair, and engaged in “play fights” in which Baisden allegedly grabbed the victim by the wrists and hands.
WSAZ reports that investigators say the 16-year-old girl received hundreds of text messages, with “some indicating an emotional connection to the victim.”
The complaint includes statements from the authorities that made it “evident the two were in a romantic relationship.” Baisden resigned from his teaching position in December and is being held on a $30,000 bond.
This unfortunate situation causes trauma regardless of the outcome of the criminal charges.
It’s also a type of sexual abuse, and the school district and its hiring practices should be investigated. If it can be established that the school district was aware of past criminal charges but hired the teacher, they could be held accountable.
