Marion County Choir Teacher Charged With Distributing Child Sexual Abuse Material

Schools are meant to be a safe place. Teachers and administrators focus on one goal: providing a productive learning environment where children can thrive. The hope is that while the kids are in school, they are insulated from the potential dangers of the real world. Serious allegations involving an educator can shake a school community’s sense of safety. Parents and students at East Fairmont High School are now facing difficult questions following a teacher’s arrest.

Michael Carpenter, 43, the choir director at East Fairmont High School, has been charged with distribution/exhibition of material depicting minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct, according to an October 21, 2026, update from WBOY/12 News. At the time of that report, Carpenter was being held in North Central Regional Jail on a $500,000 bond

As reported to WV News, Marion County Superintendent Dr. Donna Heston released a statement that Marion County Schools were notified that the state police and assisting agencies went to the school to investigate the matter.

“Marion County Schools is fully cooperating with law enforcement,” Heston’s statement reads. “The safety and well-being of our students remain a priority. To protect the integrity of the investigations, Marion County Schools cannot provide additional details at this time.”

The criminal complaint provides additional details about the allegations. According to WBOY, which obtained the complaint, Carpenter allegedly sent multiple video files through the Kik messaging application on July 25. Thirteen of the files were reported to law enforcement, with several categorized as child sexual abuse material, or CSAM. The complaint states that investigators reviewed the files and confirmed that they depicted CSAM.

After obtaining a search warrant for the contents of Carpenter’s Kik account, investigators discovered 16 videos containing CSAM that Carpenter allegedly sent to other users, according to the complaint.

The complaint also alleges that some videos showed Carpenter performing masturbatory acts in the music classroom at East Fairmont High School. The WBOY update does not establish that students were present during those alleged acts or that East Fairmont students were depicted in the material.

During an interview, Carpenter reportedly acknowledged owning the account and knowingly sending videos depicting nude children. According to the complaint as reported by WBOY, he said he could not confirm whether they were engaged in sexually explicit conduct but acknowledged knowing that some of the individuals depicted were children.

These allegations remain the subject of a pending criminal case. Carpenter is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

Legal Remedies for Families Affected by Educator Misconduct

The Marion County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office will handle the criminal prosecution. The case may proceed to trial or be resolved through a plea agreement.

There is also a potential civil complaint path that might be available to any victims of sexual abuse. While it appears the school district is fully cooperating, a thorough investigation is still needed into the school and district’s hiring and supervision protocols. Were there warning signs or previous complaints about this teacher? What training did the school provide to identify predatory behavior?
