Sissonville Woman Arrested on Multiple Child Sexual Abuse Material Charges
A Kanawha County woman has been charged in a child pornography investigation, and it has stirred a lot of controversy among many local families because of the alleged connection to preschool education.
According to WCHS, Savanna Grace Humphreys of Sissonville was arrested on charges of sexual abuse by a parent, guardian or custodian, filming sexually explicit conduct of a minor, distribution of child pornography, and possession of child pornography. That is according to the criminal complaint filed with the Kanawha County Magistrate Court.
What is especially alarming for many families is that Humphreys was a Pre-K aide at Flinn Elementary School in Sissonville. The criminal complaint alleges that the materials and images date back to July 2024.
So far, there is no indication that any of the students at Flinn Elementary were abused, but that lack of information is making many parents justifiably upset. Several parents took to social media to voice frustration that officials are being asked questions, but parents are not being provided with any substantive answers.
Other parents are suggesting that if someone’s child were in a class with Humphreys, they should check on them.
Talking to a Child About Suspected Abuse
If you ever find yourself in a situation where you suspect your child might have been abused, you need to approach the situation with extreme care to avoid causing further trauma.
To have the conversation, create a safe, quiet environment where the child feels comfortable. It is also important to ask neutral, open-ended questions that will let your child explain things in their own words. Some examples to ask are:
- Tell me about what happens at school when you feel unsafe.
- What happens when you’re with [teacher’s name]?
- Tell me about the games you play at school and who plays them with you.
- Has anyone at school asked you to keep a secret?
If you suspect that your child was abused in any situation, you should report the incident to the West Virginia Child Abuse Hotline at 1-800-352-6513.
How a West Virginia Sexual Abuse Attorney Provides Support
Once criminal charges have been filed in a sexual abuse case, it will be handled by the district attorney. However, holding the assailant accountable might not be the only option to seek justice. This is especially true with incidents involving abuse that occurred at a school, church, or youth organization. In those scenarios, the organizations can be held accountable if it can be established that they were negligent in their hiring practices and failed to provide adequate training and monitoring.
This is the type of situation where seeking the advice of an experienced sexual abuse lawyer can be extremely helpful. The legal team at Hendrickson & Long, PLLC, has helped many families seek justice against institutions that neglected their obligations to keep children safe.
